Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to examine what arguments are highlighted in the Swedish debate to legalize / not legalize surrogacy in Sweden. Another aim is to examine how gender roles are reflected in the debate. The study is based on 18 debate articles from Swedish newspapers where half debate for a legalization of surrogacy and the other half debate for a prohibitive legislation. The articles have been processed based on a qualitative content analysis with a conventional approach and were analyzed using a feminist and social constructivist perspective and based on related concepts such as gender roles, gender, feminism, morals and ethics, etc. The results of the study show that the various arguments used in the debate can be categorized into four different themes. These are the woman's right to self-determination, exploitation, the human body as a commodity and surrogacy as a question about gender equality. The results of the study also show that the debate reflects stereotypical norms about masculinity and femininity where the man is always considered to be the rational and the woman as the irrational and in constant need of society's protection. The study concludes that there are clear differences within the same society regarding how one views various norms.
