Sammanfattning: This paper aims to investigate the trend of satellite museums as a phenomenon through examining the Malmö branch of Moderna Museet. The paper explores satellite museums’aspects of power by applying the theories presented by Michel Foucault and Tony Bennett. By studying the case of Moderna Museet Malmö and comparing it to international satellite museums, it is put in an international context and analysed as part of an international trend. This trend is analysed to try to identify its underlying causes. The conclusion of the analysis is that the Malmö branch of Moderna Museet fits well into the global trend of satellite museums opening in cities that are looking to rebrand themselves, often former industrial cities such as Malmö. Further, the paper concludes that satellite museums are an important tool in the museums’ marketing, something that’s important as museums are in tough competition with all other providers of recreation and entertainment. This marketing is not only important for directly attracting visitors, but also for creating the museum’s brand identity, which is the source of the museum’s legitimizing power.
