Sammanfattning: Blockchain technology offers a new type of financial infrastructure with the potential to increase financial participation and decrease transaction costs. The technology behind it is hard to fully wrap your head around, likewise it’s different versions, potential and downsides. This paper aims to investigate two things. Firstly, what is blockchain technology and digital currencies? Secondly, how can blockchain technology and digital currencies reduce economic inequalities in underdeveloped countries? The result exposes an uncertain future, both regarding digital currencies and the development of blockchain technology. My final conclusion is that blockchain technology could, if implemented in the right way, reduce poverty and economic inequalities in underdeveloped countries.
