Sammanfattning: Title: The word timbre in itself doesn’t mean anything if it’s not incorporated with the individual person. This study aims to examine similarities between four vocal coaches regarding their approach to the work with tone colour, the timbre in their students’ voices. This study is based on a qualitative interview method with semi-structured interviews as a starting point. The recorded interviews were first processed through transcription, and then certain parts relevant to the study’s main purpose were selected. The theoretical background is based on vocal literature, and literature concerning the aspect of learning through social interaction. The main questions in the study are: Does the expression tone colour have the same meaning for the different teachers? What effect does the terms' meaning have for their individual approach? What circumstances do they perceive affect their students’ access to tone colour? What is their approach concerning the students’ personal integrity working with tone colour? What significance does the students’ access to interpretation and creativity have for working with tone colour? Main conclusions of the study are that the vocal coaches inspite of an individual approach and differences between preferences regarding tone colour put great emphasis on the students’ individual expression and tone colour. The study also shows that they all use the students’ feelings and experiences as a tool for working with tone colour, they integrate the students' inner world of ideas as a tool for further development in tone colour, both technically and for interpretation of the singing material that the vocal coaches and their students work on in the lessons.
