Sammanfattning: This thesis is an analysis of how EU shows civilian, normative, and military power in their work in Mali and Somalia. The propose of the paper is to analyze how EU shows different aspects of these three different power types in their work, both from a strategy point and in their empirical work on the ground. The theoretical framework is a build on the work done by Ian Manners, Toumas Forsberg and Annika Björkdahl regarding the power types. The analysis shows that EU in their Comprehensive approach to their work in the countries shows all three types of power. The focus is however on the civilian and normative types of powers. EU uses mostly civilian means but have the normative goals in mind at most of their work in Mali and Somalia. The military power is used to create stability so the economic civilian power tools can be used most effective. Where the tools to spread, normative power is used most effective in combination with the civilian power tools.
