Sammanfattning: In this essay identity is investigated in relation to communication technology. With the help of qualitative interviews, I conduct a deductive survey to check if my empirical material is consistent with the chosen theories. Four people’s experience of identity and social media in society is compared with theories and previous research, after which I discuss similarities and differences. They perceive social media as a service to me used individually because, despite the name, it is perceived to be social to use it in company. The persons that are interviewed show a tendency to want to distance themselves from social media, perhaps because it is considered bad to be associated with it according to society’s discourse. However, it is used as a benchmark for social success, if you get a lot of ‘likes’ you have a large circle of friends. The clear conclusion in relation to theory and previous research is that social media functions as a place to retrieve information for development of your own identity. Without this information, the individual is at risk of exclusion from the social society. It is also apparent that the changes that have occurred in social society have occurred through the emergence of communication technology, due to mobile phones rather than social media.
