Sammanfattning: The aim of this essay is to analyze the behavior of characters chosen fromTheodor Fontane’s novel, Effi Briest. In this study the chosen male charactersare being put under the scope in order to investigate to what extent theirbehavior correspond with expected male behavior, supported by theoreticallyconstructed male imperatives. It is stressed throughout the essay that genderand society have an influence on the characters’ decision making andbehavior.
