"Man är alltid nummer två i fängelset" - En kvalitativ studie om omständigheter som påverkar intagnas tillvaro under fängelsevistelsen

Supervisor: Weddig Runquist Assessor: Lars Harrysson The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of imprisonment on inmates and how they cope with prison life. This essay is based on a qualitative study with eight semi-structured interviews with individuals who have experienced long-term or recurrent imprisonment, as well as employees working with inmates. Five interviews were conducted with members within a Swedish organization named KRIS (Kriminellas Revansch i Samhället), which was established by ex-convicts and addicts who support each other integrate back into society. Three of the interviews were conducted with professionals within the prison. The result of this study shows that there are four external factors that affect the inmates during their stay in prison. These can be summarized in terms as; the prison formal regulations, the prisoners informal rules, the social environment within the prison and the prison warders discretion. Total institutions by Erving Goffman (1961/2014), Street level bureaucracy by Lipsky (1980), Discipline and punish by Foucault (1995) and Codes of Conduct by Sykes and Messinger (1960); Liljeholm-Hansson (2014); and Wieder (2001) are theoretical points used to support the results of this study.
