Sammanfattning: This essay has investigated the organizational dimensions of the municipal Rescue Services in Sweden and its challenges towards major accidents due to climate change. The results found in this essay derives from interviewing two commands of rescue operations employed by the rescue coalition Räddningstjänsten Syd. Together with the reports from public enquiries the overall assessment, according to Contingency theory, is that the municipal rescue service is in an organizational state of misfit. The decentralization of the rescue service suffers from major flaws in how they are organized in order to deal with a new national threat suggested by the Civil Contingencies Agency. To regain fit in accordance with the contingencies related to climate change the rescue services needs to adopt to new organizational aspects. This includes stronger forms of cooperation, new types of governmental steering and revising the civil protection act. Räddningstjänsten Syd which has been the outset for this essay has proved to be an example on how cooperation can transcend municipal boundaries to efficiently respond and perform rescue operations.
