Sammanfattning: Energy generation and the use of energy is associated with environmental impacts. It is imperative to reduce energy consumption – for a better environment, energy security and a more competitive industry. The Swedish government has set goals to increase the energy efficiency with 20 % and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with 40 % by 2020. The ‘energy efficiency gap’ is a concept describing the discrepancy between the potential energy savings from cost-effective energy efficiency measures that could be adopted and the savings from measures actually implemented. The explanation for the gap include various market failures and barriers for energy efficiency, e.g. competition for limited resources, insufficient knowledge, and lack of customer demands. This study covers three processes for energy efficiency: the program for improving energy efficiency in energy intensive industries (PFE), energy management systems (mainly ISO 50001), and network for energy efficiency. The purpose is to identify success factors for energy efficiency management in the industry, with the extended expectation that the results can be used when designing resource efficiency strategies. Through literature review and interviews, this study shows that the most important factors for successful increase of energy efficiency in companies is the involvement and dedication of top management and employees, and establishment of energy management through the whole organisation. Further, the importance of a systematic and continuous energy management is clearly demonstrated through all processes and interviews. The need for creation of economic incentives by governments is another success factor identified for all processes and energy efficiency in general. Lastly, the importance of proper goal setting is pointed out. Some of the results may be applicable for resource efficiency efforts but some interviewees recommend lean management as a more suitable approach.
