Vem är svensk?

Sammanfattning: As immigration and integration have become more important to Swedes in recent years, rising to the third most important election question in the 2018 election, the question of national identity has also risen as a topic of interest in Sweden. A heated national debate on what constitutes a Swedish identity raged in 2015-16. No clear consensus has been reached, but many contemporary commentators has highlighted the need for a more substantial discussion on the topic of nationhood, as there is a growing fear of an erosion of national cohesion in Swedish society. This case study was conducted with the pur-pose of investigating the attitudes among young, Swedish, citizens with Somali roots living in Rosengård, a poor and segregated neighborhood in Malmö. For this purpose, eleven semi-structured interviews have been conducted, with the aim of highlighting the respondent’s views on their Swedish identity. A clear majority of the respondents perceive themselves as both Swedish and Somali, but also describe tensions and contradictions that exist between these two identities.
