Sammanfattning: The aim of this study was to achieve an understanding of how public media pictures mental illness with help from a stigma perspective. Throughout the investigation the Stigma Process by Link and Phelan (2001) has been used to understand and interpret the material acquired. In this study 36 articles from the largest Swedish evening papers have been analyzed and the articles have been taken within a timespan from the 4th of April 2018 to the 30th of October 2018. We found that a recurring problem were the culture of being silent about mental illness as well as the lack of knowledge and treatment in this particular area. All of the proposed solutions to the problem could also be connected to breaking the silence and increasing the knowledge and therefore the treatment capabilities. Lastly, it’s clear that mental illness is a controversial subject. The picture of mental illness in media can be a factor of changing said controversy and make it more acceptable to talk about openly about mental illness. This in turn could result in a more open and acceptable society towards those with mental illness.
