Bilden av historien: Kulturarvsinstitutioners användning av Flickr och fotografiets förändrade roll
Sammanfattning: There is probably millions of photographs in the world that no one knows about because of the difficulty archivists have writing about them. It is exceedingly difficult to classify and describe photographs and very often textual models for written sources are applied uncritically to visual materials. Most libraries, archives and museums are now involved in the process of digitisation to improve access to photographs, and cultural heritage institutions seek to reach a new audience and use of their digital photographic collections. The purpose of this study is to find out why swedish cultural heritage institutions is participating in Flickr and Flickr Commons, what the photographs on Flickr do represent and what the value and meaning for a digital copy is. Flickr Commons is an area of Flickr where cultural heritage institutions can share photographs that have no known copyright restrictions. To date only two swedish institutions participating in Flickr Commons: Swedish National Heritage Board and Stockholm Transport Museum. Many swedish cultural heritage institution are participating in Flickr, but there is no list of how many, or which institution that is participating. For this study Länsmuseet Gävleborg and the Museum of Science and Technology is selected. Participating in Flickr and Flickr Commons increases awareness of the institution and its collections. It is a possibility for the institution to reach out to unknown as well as known audience and attract people to comment, share and interact with the institution. Flickr and Flickr Commons let the user contributing information about the photographs and the information gained through crowdsourcing is seriously received by the institution. The results show that web users contributed useful information and knowledge about pictures when the institution asked for it. Digitisation is a process of representation, it is far more interesting and complex than merely copying photographs from one medium to another.
