Sammanfattning: Movement is and has always been essential for our health and well-being. Today's social development indicates a more sedentary lifestyle in terms of work, everyday life and leisure time activities. The lack of physical activity is one of the biggest health challenges of today and the living habits of individuals have shown a strong reason for this. It has traditionally been the individual's own responsibility to ensure that they perform some physical activity. The fact that people have their own responsibilities for moving is not enough in today's society. Research shows that it is important to create better conditions in the social structure and promote physical activity in an urban environment. The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate and analyze how to make people move more in an urban environment. In order to understand the reasons why people have a certain pattern of movement, it is necessary to study what affects individuals' way of moving. The master thesis study focuses on individuals' movement patterns and how to get people to move more by walking or riding a bicycle instead of using the car. This is done through a survey with questions that relates with the factors that according to the literature study, influence a person's choices and ways of moving in an urban environment. The study is made to see how individuals in the defined area of Hacksta/Berga experience their environment and what influences them to be there. There are also interviews with some employees in the municipality of Österåker that are working with community planning, as well with a study of relevant plans for the area of Hacksta/Berga. This is done in order to find out how the municipality works to promote physical activity in the urban environment. In the part of discussion and conclusion of the master thesis, it was confirmed that the design of cities affects the individual's health and that there are some factors that particularly affect a person’s movement patterns and willingness to move in the urban environment. The security aspect and the lack thereof are the main reason why many do not stay in certain places and the lack of lighting is one of the reasons why many feel unsafe when it is dark. In order to get people to move more in an urban environment and walk or bicycle instead of using the car, the network of walking and cycling must be accessible by being perceived as safe, secure, close to goal points and have a limited number of barriers. It should be simple and obvious to move by walking or cycling for the individual to make that choice. The views of the individuals in the survey also reflect the literature of how important it is with green areas and that they contribute to movement. However, it is important that the area contains quality and attracts the people to be there. In plans for the area of Hacksta/Berga and through interviews with employees, they conclude that the most important measures to create an urban environment that invites physical activity are to create goals and increase accessibility in the urban environment, which is done by creating safe, accessible, pleasant and orientable places and roads.
