The role of entrant technologies in shaping sustainable transitions. How earth observation undermines the sustainable transition of the agri-food sector
Sammanfattning: New technologies cannot solve the climate crisis on their own. Although technologies are an integral part of sustainable transitions, they are embedded in complex socio-technical systems which will need to change accordingly. In the framework of sustainable transitions, the interactions between niches and the regime are well understood, but little is known about the role that new technologies can play in the transitions. We introduce the concept of entrant technologies into the multi-level perspective, defining them as new technologies that are not yet part of any socio-technical system. In order to understand the interactions between entrant technologies and sustainable transitions, we study the interactions between an entrant technology, satellite-based earth observation, and the sustainable transition of the agri-food sector by using a qualitative interview analysis. Generalizing from the case study, we identify different attraction and repulsion factors that influence entrant technologies to establish links with the regimes, but not with the niches. This finding has multiple implications for the impact that entrant technologies can have on sustainable transitions.
