Sammanfattning: Introduction: The world population is getting older and dementia is becoming morecommon. Behavioral and psychological symptoms affect the lives of the dementia, theirrelatives and the work environment for healthcare staff. Music has been shown to have apositive effect on these symptoms. Aim: To explore how different types of music therapy affects symptoms as anxiety andagitation in dementia. Method: A literature study based on ten quantitative scientific articles. The articles werefound from searches in the databases “PubMed” and “CINAHL”. Quality review was donewith SBU ́s template “assessment of randomized studies” (SBU, 2020) and JBI ́s template“Checklist for quasi-experimental studies” (JBI, 2020). For the result analysis a contentanalysis was used by Forsberg & Wengström (2016). Results: The content analysis divided the results into three categories: Group/individualmusic therapy, active/passive music therapy and music according to the participants'preferences. The articles found that music therapy had a relieving effect on anxiety and/oragitation. Music therapy in a group setting showed better results than individual musictherapy. Active participation encouraged commitment to the intervention. Music selected bythe participants increased the music's positive effects. Conclusion: Music therapy proved effective in alleviating anxiety and agitation. It provedespecially effective in group setting, in active participation and when the preferences of theparticipants were taken into consideration. If musical therapy is implemented in the dementiacare it can be a method for alleviating anxiety and agitation.
