Det "jobbiga" välfärdssamhället -en studie om skuld- och skamupplevelser
Sammanfattning: Abstract This study aims to get an insight into the complex relation between welfare payments and social guilt and shame, asking questions about different evaluations of the experience of receiving economic support from the state. In what situations related to social assistance do guilt and shame become observable? Which are the experienced positive social effects from income support? The study was conducted through qualitative interviews both with recipients of social assistance and with social workers. The analysis was carried out using labeling theory including the concepts of stigma and deviance. The results of the study showed that welfare recipients could feel labeled wrongly by the system's structure. They could feel limited by their problematic economical conditions but also controlled by the authorities. The social assistants stressed the vulnerable position of their clients as a contribution to possible feelings of social shame, guilt and stigmatization. They also highlighted income support as a safety net that proves a sense of social loyalty.
