Viktig statlig institution eller "mensmyndighet"? En diskursanalys av debatten om Jämställdhetsmyndigheten

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Genusvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: The following thesis discusses a recent debate that occurred in Sweden regarding gender equality. In the beginning of 2018, a new agency was founded - The Swedish Gender Equality Agency. However, less than a year later, the agency was threatened to be shut-down when two right-wing parties proposed a budget where the funding for the agency was retracted. This started an interesting debate in Sweden, regarding if the agency should be allowed to continue its work and further on, how gender equality is best achieved. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the debate through discourse analysis, in order to discover different meanings that the term gender equality can be filled with. During the analysis of this debate, five major discursive themes were identified: consensus and controversy regarding gender equality; a collective agency - the solution or the problem?; unnecessary gender equality work; Sweden as a gender equal country and; gender equality for “the others”. The conclusions being drawn in the following thesis are; that the term gender equality has been watered down in meaning, that debates regarding gender equality often follow normative constructions and that Sweden’s feminist government might be questioned for who their politics are beneficial for.
