Sammanfattning: The status of Western Sahara has since 1975 been a controversial topic in international relations. Morocco claims that the territory rightfully belongs to them while Polisario, the representative of the Sahrawi’s, are of the dichotomous opinion and demands independence. In this paper I will examine the statement that Western Sahara in the long run would be to weak and too poor to survive as a state. I will try this statement by applying a model that examines the state´s legitimacy through eight different aspects. My findings are that there are incentives for Western Sahara to be able to avoid becoming a failed state but, since there were ambivalent aspects as well, it´s not possible to draw any clear conclusions about the legitimacy of Western Sahara as a state. Nevertheless, this exam found that the above mentioned statement is not a valid one without further evidence and studies.
