Reducing energy consumption is interesting for all enterprises, mainly aimed to de-crease costs, but also to actively work for a better environment. This study aims to con-tribute to a reduced environmental impact and reduced energy costs by analyzing what measures can reduce the steam consumption at Berendsen Textil Service AB in Ockelbo. Berendsen washes the laundry from healthcare, hoteland restaurant custom-ers. Every day 17 tonnes of laundry is washed which uses large amounts of energy (steam), a total of 4,860 MWh was consumed in 2014 at a cost of 2.5 MSEK. The laun-dry consists of bedding, towels and staff clothing and the laundry is in operation for 12 hours a day and 250 days a year.The report analyzesvarious proposals for measures to reduce energy use in the washing process. The measures analyzed are1.A replacement to more efficient washing tubes and dryers2.Increased use of existing waste water heat exchanger3.Chemical sanitizing4.A more efficient productionThe Svanen certification, which is a marketing tool and a proof that the plant meets the customers' environmental requirements, is used in the study to analyse the company's environmental impact based on energy consumption.Replacing dryers would lead to a cost reduction of 0.6 MSEK / year, with a payback period of approximately 4 years, which is considered a profitable investment. This measurecould lead to a better drying of the laundry, which in turn would lead to a more efficient production. An exchange of batch washer with a long pay-off period of 15 years, could also provide a better productivity.The existing wastewater heat exchanger hasa free capacity of 1.5 l/s which would save the company some 96 kSEK per annum. Reducing steam consumption by replacing chemicals and lower wash temperature to 40 ° C would save the company 520 000 SEK per year, but this action needs to be investi-gated more in order to be implemented.Amoreefficient production is possible for Ber-endsen in Ockelbo. If Berendsen double their production, steam to a value of 1.6 MSEK would be possible to use. This increase in production would not reduce actual steam consumption, but this measure utilises the steam more efficiently by reducing the number of kWh / kg laundry.The total savings potential based on the proposed measures is 1.3 MSEK(excluding higherproduction efficiency).To achieve Berendsen local goals a reduction in energy consumption by 0.06 kWh / kg laundry is required. If all proposed measures are imple-mented(excluding higherproduction efficiency), it results in a reduction of 0.63kWh / kg laundry. In order to receive more points in the Svanen system a combination of more efficient production and reduced steam consumption would be beneficial. According to Svanen criteria and the proposals for action, an exchange of dryers provides 2 points and more efficient production another 2 points, which together adds 4 points. In sum-mary, an exchange of dryers is the most sustainable measure from an economic-and environmental perspective.
