Abstract

This master thesis was performed at Scania transmission department in Södertälje, where the manufacturing of gears is done. Today a large amount of manual handling is performed between the machining and the hardening process. Most of the manual handling is done at the heat treatment department. The purpose of this master thesis is to give a suggestion on how to reduce or eliminate the manual handling at the heat treatment department. The possibility to use the same packaging throughout the processes will also be investigated.

To get a clear picture of the existing problems in the workshop interviews, observations and ergonomic surveys were performed. Afterwards different concept generation tools and concept selection tools were used to generate and select different solutions for the identified problems.

The result was a suggested solution for the whole production stream where gears are loaded in new pallets by a robot with spacers to insure the quality of the gears during transportation. At the heat treatment process the gears are placed on new heat treatment trays which are handled with a robot instead of manually. After the heat treatment the gears are abrasively blasted and repacked by a robot into pallets for transportation to the machining process. At the beginning of the machining process a robot unloads the pallet and puts the gears piece by piece on a conveyor.

The conclusion made from the result was that the manual handling was eliminated at the heat treatment department. This fulfilled the goal of the master thesis. The inquiry on whether or not it was possible to use the same packaging throughout the production stream showed that this was not possible. Further conclusions made from the result were that the capacity for the packaging between the machining and hardening processes increased. Even the capacity for the heat treatment tray increased. The risk for nicks is decreased because the manual handling is eliminated and the new pallet insures the quality during transportation better than the old pallet.
