Abstract

The background to this essay is previous experience in working in a preschool abroad. The teachers I met there did not relate to the children in the same way that I’m used to in Sweden. In my view, different expectations on the children, made them not make use of the children’s full potential to develop.

The starting-point for this essay is the”life world perspective”. The life world is the world that we all aim towards, it is located inside us and we are also parts of it, all this at the same time. The child experiences and lives through this “life-world” The child is involved with the world from the first moment as well as with all the human beings in it. Through interaction and communication the child becomes itself and it gives the child a feeling of meaning. It is from the first moment a meaning- creating individual that seeks contact with everything in its life-world. I am interested in ways to see children and ways to relate to them that create an environment that furthers the children’s feelings about, and beliefs in themselves, and therefore see a good potential in the life world perspective.

The purpose of this essay is to look into how teachers’ thoughts about children and the expectations that we put upon them are similar to the life world perspective.

By interviewing 3 teachers in different preschools, I have shaped three different themes that include the answers I have received. These themes are: self-image, an individual in co-existence and the child as a fellow creature.

The teachers I interviewed expressed understandings that in many ways agree with a life world perspective. Even if the same concepts are not always used, there still is a broad awareness among the interviewed teachers, where the ways you relate to others were seen as important and beliefs in the children’s competences were strong. I feel, on the basis of my interviews, that the teachers are ambitious and very involved in the children’s life-worlds and the meetings that take place between them in the preschools.
