Sammanfattning: The concept of large paintings includes panoramas, cycloramas and other paintings that in size exceeds the normal magnitude of wall hung paintings. When these large paintings are mounted in the ceiling, they are referred to as plafonds. When they are performed on canvas, certain kinds of structural distortions and stress occurs. In addition, because of their size and mounting high up in the ceiling, plafond paintings are often difficult to handle, which leads to less or no maintenance. A plafond may therefore be left without attendance for many decades. This thesis has its focus on what happens with plafond paintings on canvas when they are exposed to gravitational forces, and the problems involved in restoring large paintings mounted in the ceiling. One specific painting by Louis Jean Desprez is described thoroughly, while the rest of the objects mentioned are being referred to in more general terms. Conclusion: It is, indeed, a complex operation to work with outsized painting. But instead of focusing on the problems and the costs, one can choose to see it as a challenge and thus be a part of a unique process. Using the documented knowledge in the area, and customise the methods and materials to a specific painting, makes it quite possible to overcome almost any obstacle and achieve a most satisfying treatment. This includes creating practical solutions for future care, such as easy removal of the painting from the ceiling in order to maintain the condition of the painting.
