Sammanfattning: Background: Companies are pressured by their owners to increase their cost efficiency through using their employees in the right way (Olhager, 2013). One way is to improve the layout of the production to achieve this (Nahmias, 2013). How process are designed needs to be questioned and evaluated in order to achieve efficiency. Often processes are designed a long time ago and then small modifications are made without thinking of the whole process (Ljungberg & Larsson, 2012). Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the efficiency of the assembly line at Överums Bruk AB and how the efficiency could be improved through a redesigned layout. Method: The authors have made a process mapping and a time study to investigate how efficient the assembly is. The theoretical framework is based on scientific articles and literary sources. Conclusions: According to the circumstances at Överums bruk AB an assembly line is suitable since their products are standardized, mainly through their product design based on modules. The findings are that it is possible to achieve higher efficiency by balance the assembly line. The original efficiency of 69,3% could theoretically be improved to 99,6%.
