Att vara eller icke vara : Autonomibegreppet hos Kant, Adorno och i gatukonstens diskurs
To Be or Not to Be explores the concept of autonomy within the street art discourse and it starts byanalyzing the concept in both Immanuel Kant's and Theodor W. Adorno's theories of autonomy. Thepaper's main focus is the autonomy of art and artistic autonomy and how these ideas are expressedand viewed within the discourse of street art. By analyzing statements made by practitioners whoare active within the street art discourse, both as artists and as gallery owners, curators, auctioneersetc., this paper concludes that the concept of autonomy in the street art discourse is much closer tothat of Adorno's concept of autonomy than that of Kant's.In the analysis of the concept of autonomy this paper draws on both Koselleck's conceptualhistory and the poststructuralism of Laclau and Mouffe. This paper utilizes Koselleck's method ofsynchronical and diachronical analysis to explore the concept of autonomy and the conceptssurrounding autonomy. From the theories of Laclau and Mouffe, it mainly uses their concepts of'myth', 'floating signifier' and 'antagonism' which are developed in their theory of discourse, toanalyze the statements made by the practitioners within the street art discourse.To give this paper a firm theoretical foundation to stand on it has been divided into two parts. Inpart one it defends poststructuralism from some of the critique that this theory have been the subjectof. This has been done in order to refute, otherwise, possible criticism of part two, where the actualanalysis of autonomy is presented.
