Sammanfattning: This text is a comparative case study with two specific analysis units, Bahrain and Qatar. The case used in this study is the Arab uprising in the middle east on the spring of 2011. Qatar and Bahrain can be considered comparable as the states are equal in factors such as geographical location, natural recourses and government. The ruling families of the states have also been in power for about the same amount of time. Asabiyyah and late rentierism are the chosen theories of this work, which are theories often used in studies of state formation in the middle east. The purpose of this text is to get a deeper understanding about conflicts in general, and the Arab spring specifically. The purpose is also to test the theories asabiyyah and late rentierism and its relevance in cases of modern societies. The general conclusions gathered from this study is that religious and diplomatic factors play a major role in the outcome of the Arab spring. Even factors such as popularity and influence of the clans are considered relevant to the outcome of the case. Theories built in the Middle Ages, just like asabiyyah, must therefore be discussed. Especially regarding its continued relevance to studies on state formation in modern cases.
