Millesgården : vårdprogram samt förslag till förbättrad tillgänglighet

Sammanfattning: Millesgården is a museum on the island of Lidingö outside Stockholm. It contains the buildings which were the home and studios of the artist Carl Milles and his artist wife Olga. It also contains the grounds that originated as the garden of their home. Carl Milles later developed the garden into a sculpture park where a great part of the sculptors works are on display. In this report only the sculpture park is treated. The park is now approaching an age of 100 years. During the first half century of its existence, the artist Carl himself was the main propelling factor behind the design and development of the park. After his death, the work in the park has been concentrated on preservation and maintenance. The basic features of the park are still the same as when the artist died. Its character though, has changed over the years due to wear and tear, the dynamics of the plant material and insufficient resources for maintenance. Some minor additions have also been made. One of the main purposes of the master thesis has been to ameliorate the accessibility of the park that is bad due to the topography and the status of sealed surfaces. In the management plan itself, the development in the passed and the current situation is studied for each part of the park, alongside a discussion and specification of proposed measures. The programme defines the main cultural values of each part of the park, focussing on the esthetical values, as they are values that are predominant in the physical environment in the park. It also defines the visual character at present and in the passed of each part of the park and which factors that creates it. Only being aware of those factors, is it possible to take the values into consideration in order to restore or strengthen them or protect them when new additions are made. In addition to increasing accessibility, the measures mainly aim at restoring lost or weakened characters in each part of the park and taking away later additions that has not been beneficial to the design of the park. Some measures also aim at solving problems that has arisen through the way the dynamics of the trees and the way the structures of the park has been built around them not always being compatible in the long run. At the end of the report, a couple of design proposals are found. There are proposals how ramps can be designed for the lower terrace (nedre terrassen), Olga's terrace and at the old entry, and how a wheel chair lift can be put in Anne's garden (Annes trädgård). For the lower terrace, proposals are also made on new tree planting and new planting beds around the oak trees.
