Sammanfattning: Music streaming services are changing the music industry from the inside. After being struck by the piracy wave in the early 2000's, the industry was characterized by declining sales, layoffs, and a seemingly futile battle on what had become a culture of copyright infringement. After the successful launch of the music streaming service Spotify, the Swedish recording industry took a turn for the better. Music streaming services are creating both new opportunities and challenges to the music industry. This paper aims to study some of the opportunities and challenges concerning the creation of new music. What are the success factors in the recording industry to create popular music for a wide audience that can prosper in a world of streaming We have conducted a series of qualitative interviews with executives and employees of the Swedish branch of Sony Music Entertainment. Our findings suggest that even considering the emergence of new technology, the industry needs to focus more than ever on keeping key knowledge of the music market within the company, attracting top-tier artists, and creating high-quality music. By creating an atmosphere in the company where the employees thrive and are encouraged to strengthen the relationships to the artists, the relationships in themselves can become the strongest competitive advantage of the label.
