Sammanfattning: The object of the study is to examine how social science teachers, who lecture on different educational programs in Swedish upper secondary schools, defines and perceive to political participation. The applied method is qualitative interviews. Bert Giestas' educational functions and three definitions of political participation are applied as the basis for analyzing the results. The results show that teachers define political participation and perceive to the teaching assignment in different ways within different educational programs. However, several similarities between teachers perceptions are also discerned. Several teachers include a social focus in their definitions of political participation, while other teachers define political participation based on a political systemfocus. Furthermore, social science teachers express three aspects in relation to the purpose of the teaching assignment, which is to develop students into democratic citizens, to provide students with knowledge and to develop students into critical citizens.
