Sammanfattning: Today the ability to swim is taken for granted by most people. Most of Sweden’s adult population can swim which is reflected in the reduced number of accidental drownings. About 1900 AD when Sweden’s population was about five million the average drownings per year was 1100. During the next century drownings reduced to about 150 people per year dispite a population growth to nine million. The main purpose of this essay is to study how the compulsory school (1-9) in-terpret the existing curriculum (Lpo 94) about swimming education. That inter-pretation and the perception of swimming ability is felt to be without formal ba-sis. The main question is will Lpo 94 lead to an actual increase in swimming ability at grade 9. In order to answer my study’s aims I have made two studies, a qualitative study and a quantitative study. The first deals with text analysis of guidelines from the 1900th century. The second study results from guidelines based on School-Sport-Health (SIH-project). Questions concern swimming ability, swimming intensity and location and are extracted from students and teachers in grade 9.
