The Male Gaze on The Male Gays: En diskursanalys av Louisianas utställning om Marsden Hartley

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Avdelningen för konsthistoria och visuella studier

Sammanfattning: This study aims to shed light on how the works of homosexual artists, and the homosexual artists themselves, are subject to sexualisation or fetishization through the theories and analyses posed by museums and their curators. This is demonstrated by the example of the retrospective exhibition on Marsden Hartley by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. This study uses texts about the work from the exhibition halls and analyses them using discourse analysis to investigate the museum’s use of power. Theories such as the male gaze are used to discuss the sexualisation of this homosexual artist, and how this comes to influence the viewer’s perceptions of these works.
