Sammanfattning: This bachelor's thesis analyses the transformation of the Finnish Armed Forces between 2004 and 2017. The aim is to answer the question of what the changes have been like and in what way these changes have affected the Finnish Navy. In the long run, could the changes affect the Swedish-Finnish defence cooperation? The thesis is mainly based on the four defence policy reports published during the period. The reports have been affected by the increasingly positive security policy situation in the Baltic sea region from the end of the Cold War to the crisis in Georgia in 2008 and certainly from Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. To find out what has been behind the decisions made, I have used two of Allison's three different theories on this case. The conclusions of this study indicating that the transformation of the Finnish Armed Forces is based mainly on globalisation and security policy assessments. Also, political priorities linked to the defence economy should not be excluded. Nor should Finland's growing interest in contributing to international crisis management operations be underestimated once the political decisions have been taken. The future of the Finnish Navy looks bright, so does Swedish-Finnish defence cooperation.
