Sammanfattning: According to a large amount of researchers, conflict arises as western tourists visit Muslim destinations. When differentiating customs, values and worldviews meet, a conflict can arise in relation to the utilisation of the physical area in which the two cultures interact. With the help of physical separation and double standard policies, some destinations have chosen demarcation as a tool to uphold religious values whilst still offering the desires of the tourist, thus regulating the amount of culture clashes. However, same result can also be achieved through tolerance and respect to the Other’s culture, according to other researchers. This paper is an ethnographical field study in the destination of Side, Turkey, in order to find out which culture clashes arise when Scandinavian tourists visit the destination, as well as understanding the need for demarcations, in order to regulate the culture clashes. Firstly, the locals of Side showed a great extent of tolerance towards the tourists, and believe that culture clashes do not happen. Second, there is no clear physical separation or double standard policies, which argues that Side uses a more transboundary, tolerant approach in handling culture clashes. However, the writers of this paper found that their naked skin was not equally accepted all over the city, resulting in a glaring local population as soon as they left the touristic areas of the beach. In Side, the tourist’s naked skin, and the local’s glaring become physical makers of how the cultures differentiate, by representing how the Other constructs meaning in a different way than I. The naked skin and the starring creates what we call a geography of discomfort, where the meaning construction creates a conflict about the utilisation of a place, which is expressed in implicit demarcation that affect the tourist’s movement pattern. Key-words: demarcation, culture clash, gazing on the Other, culture, movement pattern, Turkey.
