Sammanfattning: Author: Fredrik Nilsson Title: To understand consensus – a study about Swedish social workers thoughts and experiences about consensus when planning treatment for clients with substance abuse [translated title] Supervisor: Arne Kristiansen Assessor: Ulrika Levander The aim for this study was to examine how Swedish social secretaries who worked with alcohol and drug addiction, viewed the consensus between themselves and their clients in regards to deciding suitable treatment. To answer the questions the study conducted five qualitative interviews with Swedish social secretaries who worked with treatment-assessment for clients with substance abuse at the local government. The study shows that consensus was met in most of the cases. When the social secretaries discussed with the clients they met consensus through conversation and by educating the clients. Clients’ lack of information was a big obstacle in the strive for consensus. Mental illness in combination with a drug or alcohol abuse was also an obstacle to meet consensus. Lastly different focus in regards to what aims the treatment has was a barrier to get through. A complex situation in which the social secretaries were listening to what their clients said, even if they had a different opinion.
