Sammanfattning: Major revolutionary and technological developments have taken place in the world, yet developments in waste management in particular have been slower than others and remained more or less unchanged through the years. The Swedish company Envac invented the stationary automated vacuum waste collection system AVAC, an underground pipe network where waste is transported through a vacuum technique to a collection station where the waste is separated into different containers. Sweden’s biggest stationary AVAC-system is under construction in Brunnshög, an urban development project in Lund’s municipality. The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the stationary AVAC-system in Brunnshög and to understand what factors and conditions must be considered when planning and constructing this system. This study is based on literature analyses and interviews with Lund´s municipality and Envac, who provide and build the system, to investigate what the possibilities and obstacles are with the newly installed AVAC-system in Brunnshög. This study shows that an AVAC-system results in cleaner and sustainable urban environments where unpleasant smell and overfilled bins are eliminated. Furthermore, the system enables significantly reduction of air pollution caused by waste collection traffic, which in turn leads to a more resilient district. The obstacles identified in this study are partly difficulties with the dimensioning due to narrow spaces in the ground but also because of changes in the gross floor area and what the property owners decide to build on that area, whether it is small or big apartments or possibly businesses. Some technical measures and developments are highlighted in this study, such as artificial intelligence and digitalization that can be implemented to the system to increase the circular economy and the sorting rate. Additionally, values of certain fractions, mainly metals and textiles are discussed for future imposition of urban mining in the district.
