Sammanfattning: This study investigates if transfer of plant material in the form of hay is an effective method for establishment of species rich grassland on former arable land in southwestern Scania, Sweden. An inventory of vascular plants was conducted to analyze the early establishment on areas with added hay vs. areas with no hay added. The inventory data was related to a set of ecological indicators (mainly Ellenberg values) to find out what environmental factors are most important for successful establishment. Three years after the transfer of hay 63 target species were found in the investigated area, and species richness, the number of target species and the cover of species and were significantly higher in areas with added hay compared to areas with no hay added. Species with high conservation value, declining abundance in Scania and low Ellenberg values for nitrogen were least successful in terms of establishment. The result also show that significant vegetation gradients can develop within just 3 years after hay transfer, manifested as higher species diversity in valleys compared to peaks. The extensive establishment of grassland species in the survey area shows that transfer of seed-containing hay can be an effective conservation method to create new species-rich grasslands.
