En hermeneutik värdig Gud? : En undersökning av Maximos Bekännarens hermeneutik och dess potentiella bidrag till dagens bibeltolkning

Sammanfattning: Some theological schools consider the human conscience to be subordinate as a means to revelation of God’s nature compared to the biblical text. This can lead the reader of these texts to do violence to their own conscience by conforming it to the perceived biblical witness, although the two (the reader’s conscience and the biblical witness) can appear as in stark contrast to one another. A cognitive dissonance regarding the view of God’s nature can result, leading to spiritual angst. In this thesis, I examine the potential of Maximus the Confessor’s biblical interpretation to address this issue by exploring his critique of the literal level of the text based on his judgment of what constitutes behavior worthy of God in his exegesis of 2 Chronicles 32:25–26. I develop a suggestion as to how the readers conscience can be theologically motivated to be a source of knowledge of God’s nature worthy of making interpretive judgments based on Maximus’ exegesis and theological understanding of God, scripture and man.
