Sammanfattning: Aim The overall aim of this study has been to gain knowledge about what characterize upper secondary school students participating in the subject course physical education and health (PEH). To investigate this, the following questions are formulated: What motivates the students to attend PEH? How do the students experience teaching? What influences the students' opinions of the subject? Method We conducted a qualitative study using interview as method. Six students, from year 2; three girls and three boys, from different studying programs at an upper secondary school in the region of Mälardalen were interviewed. The students had been recommended and asked to participate by their teachers in PEH. All students participated in PEH at the time of the interview. The study has a salutogenic approach. Aaron Antonvsky's SOC-theory was used in the design of the interview guide and when analyzing the empirical material. Results The results of the study show that upper secondary students' most common reasons for participating in the subject course PEH are to get grades and exercise, it's fun and because it's compulsory. The attitudes towards PEH are generally positive among the interviewed students. Students generally seem to feel that participating is manageable, comprehensible and meaningful. The teacher, the choice between a more sports-oriented or a more exercise-oriented teaching, social interaction, activities and equipment are factors that emerge as particularly crucial for students' understanding of the subject. Conclusion Given that a certain manageability, comprehensibility and meaningfulness can be distinguished from the general statements, it seems that the interviewed students generally experience a sense of coherence in the subject course PEH. In addition to this, the students seem to have support from general resistance resources (GRR) that are important to strengthen SOC. This is probably contributing to their participation in PEH.
