Sammanfattning: How sailors perceive communication with family when at sea. Time spent at sea has always meant the sailor could not have the same contact and presence with his or her family as people who work with a land-based profession. Communication within the family and its perception of how the communication should be handled internally is very important for socializing as it helps to create togetherness. What are the sailors’ opinions about the existing communication they have with the land-based family? Using semi- structured interviews 8 sailors were interviewed about how they perceive communication when they are onboard ship working. The results showed the sailors have great use of phone, email and Facebook when it comes to having contact with the people on land. One conclusion from the interviews is that every sailor has his or her routines for communicate with the family as to whether the communication should be done by phone or social media and at what intervals.
