Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to examine how learning materials tied to the social studies subject (“samhällskunskap”) portray Sweden's parliamentary parties. The purpose of the examination is to identify key differences and similarities between the way the parties are portrayed, aswell as to identify whether the same political party is portrayed differently in different learning materials. Furthermore the study aims to see whether these portrayals are objective or not, using a theoretical lens consisting of the Swedish schools core values (“värdegrund”) to explain any infractions identified of the author's perceived objectivity. Using a qualitative text analysis a total of five different learning materials were examined. The conclusion of the study was that one of Sweden's eight political parties, the Swedish democrats (“Sverigedemokraterna''), were portrayed in a different type of way compared to the rest. This difference was exemplified by the author's general attitude toward the party, where the party's portrayal consisted of a value-ridden and non-objective discourse. There also were some differences identified between how different learning materials portrayed one and the same party, in most part explained by the learning materials' limited accounting of the parties in general, rather than actual disagreements. Lastly the study concluded that the Swedish schools core values were able to produce a possible explanation for the unequal treatment of the Swedish democrats, since the Swedish democrats views could be perceived as being incompatible with the core values of the Swedish school.
