Petter och Lotta utforskar genus : En genusstudie av Elsa Beskows bilderböcker om Tant Grön, Tant Brun och Tant Gredelin

Sammanfattning: In this essay I investigate how gender roles gets protrayed in the famous, swedishauthor Elsa Beskow’s picture books about the three aunts, Aunt Green, Aunt Brownand Aunt Lavender. The focus is on the main charcters which are the three aunts,Uncle Blue, Peter and Lotta and especially the picture book The adventures of Peterand Lotta. The central point of this essay were to analyze how Beskow display stereotypicalgender roles in both the verbal and visual story of her picture books about the threeaunts. Using gender, children’s literature and picture book theories I couldinvestigate Beskows works and identify a lot of typical gender roles in thecharacters clothes and characteristics. However, she also includes features, such asthe clothes, which are typical for the time being. Beskow does go against the flow,for example when she includes Lotta, a girl, in a masculine narrative. The conclusion of this essay is that Elsa Beskow should be perceived as a modernauthor for her time because she illustrate women who are allowed to be feminineand still be a part of the masculine narratives. She illustrate women who isn’t dependent on men and men who are allowed to have feminine characteristics.
