Sammanfattning: The digitalisation of processes in societal planning has increased the need for a more standardised approach to the visualisation of geographic information. In recent years a lot of progress has been made with regards to digital models of cities and societies. However, this does not apply to underground data and models to the same extent. The overall objective of this report is to identify areas of improvement for subsurface data visualisation, focusing on the fields of geotechnical engineering and geoconstructions. In order to achieve this, the study has been divided to focus on three main research areas. The first of these aims to identify benefits with greater coordination of underground data. The purpose of the second research question is to establish which requirements are most relevant for visualisation of underground data and subsurface structures. Lastly, the final part of the study aims to turn these requirements into a recommendation for how to visualise the underground in both two and three dimensions. Various methods have been employed to answer the questions raised in this report. Literature on a variety of topics was consulted in order to identify advantages with more coordination regarding underground data. Sources include governmental agencies, research projects, and international case studies. Requirements for clear visualisation were identified through a study of cartographic principles as well as interviews with people who in different ways work with underground data, and regularly use it to create maps and models. A practical study was then conducted to transform the identified requirements into a recommendation for visualisation of the underground. The study shows that it is important to have carefully documented and coordinated information to avoid spatial conflicts in the underground. This can reduce costs at the beginning of construction projects, reduce information loss and contribute to a more efficient use of shared resources. Furthermore the report presents specific requirements and recommendations for visualisation of geotechnical data and subsurface constructions. These recommendations can be used as guidelines for the overall formatting and creation of maps and models of the underground.
