Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to examine how individuals who have filed a complaint to the Swedish media accountability system and won their case, have experienced the process and whether or not they have gained redemption from the result. Furthermore, this study answers the question: if they have not received redemption from the system, what measures are needed for them to feel satisfied? Based on the aforementioned, we can identify both strengths and weaknesses within the current media accountability system. In addition, the study also examines how these individuals were affected by the original publication that led to them filing the complaint. The study is based on qualitative in-depth interviews with eight individuals who won their cases in 2022 and 2023. To gain an understanding of these individuals’ different perceptions of redemption and justice within the context of media ethics, the study uses three theories of justice – restorative, retributive and preventive justice. The results of the study show that the original publications led to a varying degree of damaging consequences to the individuals. These consequences include impact on the individual’s family as well as damage to their professional reputation. In addition, the study shows that many were satisfied with the media accountability system and have, more or less, gained redemption, according to the system’s definition. However, many state that they would gain redemption to a higher degree if they would receive economic compensation, a personal apology or if the media faced some form of greater punishment.
