Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to explore how the city of Malmö is addressing residentialsegregation and the measures and tools that have been implemented, as well as how citizenparticipation has been applied in these processes. The study is based on a qualitativeinvestigation involving literature reviews, interviews, and observations. The focus is onMalmö, where socioeconomic segregation is prevalent, with ethnicity and income oftencoinciding in residential areas. Special attention is given to the Herrgården area in Rosengård,which has undergone various stages of development and faces challenges related to inequalityand social sustainability.In-depth examination is conducted on how the initiative "Kraftsamling Herrgården" has beenestablished in Herrgården, where different stakeholders collaborate to promote sustainabledevelopment. A significant meeting place in the area is Varda, which serves as a space forcollaboration and creativity. Given that the goal of "Kraftsamling Herrgården" is to meet theneeds of the area, promote participation in development processes, and create opportunitiesfor culture and learning, the study aims to assess its effectiveness based on the definedobjectives. To address the research questions, a combination of primary and secondary sources has beenutilized. Primary sources include interviews and observations, while secondary sourcesconsist of existing research and literature. The theories we have utilized are Pierre Bourdieu'stheory of capital, habitus as well as Arnstein's ladder of participation. We have also theorizedthe concept of Stigma based on Goffman (2010). The theory of capital provides us with afoundation for understanding how individuals with different forms of capital influence andcreate social inequalities in society. By analyzing habitus and using Arnstein's ladder, weexamine the level at which citizen participation occurs. The interviews and observations are analyzed and discussed based on the theories andtheoretical frameworks. We also discuss the relationship between inequality and segregation, who is responsible for countering residential segregation and who creates all expectations andthe relationship between these. For the interviews, we have a representative fromStadsbyggnadskontoret in Malmö, a project manager at Rädda Barnen, a youths’ group, parent group and several interviews from Herrgården during the observation sessions.Sketches illustrating the layout of the area have also been produced to support the analysis. In conclusion, we summarize the analysis and discussions by getting answers to the researchquestions. The essay ends with our reflections and insights.
