  1. 1. “It was a free and healthy job” : timber floating on the river Ångermanälven in the 20th century

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and Management

    Författare :Olivia Forssén; [2023]
    Nyckelord :timber floating; forest history; women in timber floating; interviews; historical records;

    Sammanfattning : The exploitation of northern Sweden's forests began in about the 1830s and continued expanding northwards over the following decades. A key factor that enabling the exploitation of these forests was the natural infrastructure, such as the network of rivers, creeks and flooding during the summer, which made it possible to float timber from the forests to the sawmills on the coast. 2. 2. Characteristics of instream wood following alluvial river restoration : Using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles

    Kandidat-uppsats, Umeå universitet/Institutionen för ekologi, miljö och geovetenskap

    Författare :Martina Fjällberg; [2023]
    Nyckelord :River restoration; instream wood; uncrewed aerial vehicles; fluvial geomorphology.;

    Sammanfattning : River restoration is something that is often used to help restore watercourses that were historically used for timber floating. In these restorations, instream wood (IW) plays a big role in increasing biodiversity and habitat heterogeneity in watercourses. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The end of the timber frontier in northern Sweden : early logging, natural forests and the frontier concept

    Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and Management

    Författare :Alice Cosatti; [2022]
    Nyckelord :timber frontier; Northern Sweden; Tjeggelvas nature reserve; Piteälven; Norrbotten; high-grading;

    Sammanfattning : The Fennoscandian forests experienced drastic changes in the 19th century. The high demand for timber during the European industrialization pushed the timber companies towards increasingly remote forest landscapes for resource extraction. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Restaureringens effekt på öringpopulationen

    Kandidat-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and Management

    Författare :Ola Carlström; Sebastian Dagman; [2022]
    Nyckelord :restaurering; flottning; öring; älv; bäck;

    Sammanfattning : Until the 1970s, rivers in Sweden were used for timber floating. In order for the floating to be as efficient as possible, with a minimum of timber getting stuck, many rivers were cleared. Large rocks and boulders were removed from the main channel and tributaries, backwaters and shallow areas were secluded. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Biodiversity and habitat conditions in reaches with high flow velocity along gradients in hydrological and geomorphological alteration : A study of six rivers in Sweden

    Master-uppsats, Umeå universitet/Institutionen för ekologi, miljö och geovetenskap

    Författare :Anders Aalto; [2021]
    Nyckelord :Hydrology; Geomorphology; Biological variables; Human alteration;

    Sammanfattning : The vast majority of rivers in the developed world are affected by human alteration, which in turn negatively affects the species that rely on these highly diverse and species rich areas to survive. Homogenization of previously heterogenic areas due to a change in water discharge and the substrate availability in the rivers is often regarded as the main reason for the loss of species richness in rivers and the riparian zone.
