Riskklassificering av nedlagda deponier i Trelleborgs kommun - En jämförande fallstudie av riskbedömningen i två tidigare metoder och MIFO

Sammanfattning: Thousands of disused landfills in Sweden pose a threat to human health and the environment. The most common landfill has received both industrial and municipal waste and contains metals, heavy metals, organic compounds, chlorides and nutrients. This study examines the disused landfills in the most southern municipality in Sweden, Trelleborg. The purpose of this study was to examine what risks the disused landfills pose to the environment and human health and the necessity of new risk assessments. A comparison has been conducted between two older risk assessment methods and the one in use today, Method of Surveying Contaminated Sites (MIFO) by the Swedish Environment Protection Agency. In order to find out what risks the landfills pose and to be able to prioritize them, the methodology in MIFO and other reports of interest have been adjusted for a quicker risk classification. The results are presented in a preliminary risk assessment of all identifiable landfills in the municipality. This study shows that 11 out of the 16 identified landfills cause a level of risk warranting further investigation while the prior assessments resulted in further investigations of three landfills. This older risk assessment conducted in Trelleborg shows similarities with the one used on a national scale in 80´s and 90´s which urges the need of new assessments in more municipalities. Some of the landfills may have an impact on water courses and some on important habitats like marl pits, others are located below land used for agriculture. A couple of the landfills are now situated in populated areas or in industrial zones, which expose people for a risk of landfill gas explosion. This stresses the need of identifying and communicating the locations of the landfills when planning the use of land.
