Sammanfattning: In the process of urbanization and growing cities the city´s limits are expanding, and as a result the industrial areas once located in the periphery of the city have now increased in interest. In recent decades there has been a change within cultural policy, which has altered the way in which we plan our cities and view the value of culture and creativity. This essay studies the culture within the old Meatpacking District in Stockholm and which form of culture is preserved in the process of reshaping the area, making space for new housing, offices, retail trade and services. The purpose is to identify how plans for the redevelopment are influenced by the current discourse within urban planning theory and how this affects culture. The study is based on several theoretical views concerning cultural strategies, the creative city, cultural value, place identity and place branding. The empirical data have been collected through interviews, document analysis and observation. The analysis of the study questions the possible outcomes, for e.g. gentrification and how this will have an effect on the physical planning of the area as well as the range of culture represented within it. The question is how to establish a balance between public and private interests in order to create a diverse and colorful new district.
