Sammanfattning: This academic study delves into the significant shift in Sweden's foreign policy with regard to NATO membership, focusing on the Social Democratic Party's (SAP) historical pivot in 2022. Set against the backdrop of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the resultant altered security landscape in Europe, this paper seeks to unravel the internal and external factors influencing SAP's endorsement of Sweden's NATO application. By applying theoretical frameworks such as the 'Fear of Abandonment' and the 'Social Construction of Realism', the research examines the interplay of geopolitical dynamics and domestic political considerations that culminated in this transformative decision. The study employs qualitative content analysis, scrutinizing official statements and policy documents of the Social Democrats, to understand the nuances of their changed stance. The paper addresses pivotal questions: How did Russia's aggression in Ukraine shape SAP's approach to NATO? What role did the 'Fear of Abandonment' play in this policy reorientation? And, to what extent did evolving security dynamics in Europe influence Sweden's reassessment of its traditional non-alignment policy? This research contributes to the broader understanding of shifts in national security policies under pressing international crises. It offers insights into how historical neutrality can be reconsidered in the face of new security challenges, providing a case study of Sweden's strategic recalibration in response to changing geopolitical realities. The findings underscore the complexity of foreign policy decision-making processes, particularly in times of heightened security tensions and regional instability. This has led to a successful study and analysis in which support for the theories of "fear of abandonment" and "social construction of realism" has been corroborated or demonstrated.
