Sammanfattning: Physical activity is widely acknowledged as vital for maintaining health over both short and long periods. Current research, including a 2023 report from the national food agency, highlights a concerning trend among children and adolescents towards increased sedentarism. This study delves into the under- explored aspect of physical inactivity during school hours, particularly in physical education and health (PEH) classes. It seeks to understand the factors influencing girls' reluctance to participate in these classes and their preferences for an ideal PE curriculum. The specific focus is on high school girls who attend but do not actively participate in PE, either not changing into sportswear or opting to observe from the sidelines.   To explore these issues, this study employed a qualitative research methodology, focusing on a purposely selected sample of eight female students from various schools across southern Svealand, Sweden. This approach facilitated an in-depth understanding of the individual and collective experiences of the participants. A semi- structured individual interview and interviews in focus groups allowed the exploration of personal perceptions and attitude toward PE, providing a nuanced understanding of the factors at play.   The results of this study indicate a significant shift in the girls' attitudes towards sports and physical activity, particularly during the transition to high school. This change is linked to the persistence of gender roles within the classroom, the pedagogical approaches of instructors and the social dynamics within the classroom and the changing room settings. These factors collectively contribute to a decline in self- esteem and self- confidence among the girls, ultimately affecting their participation in PEH. The study highlights the need for a more inclusive approach to physical education.
