Sammanfattning: Surveillance has increased in the media space, as a result of the changed view of risks and threats in the Western world. This can be seen as an effect of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. Media's presentation of risks has led to an increased risk-awareness and concerns about crime and terror. This raises the question of surveillance. Previous research on media and surveillance has shown that media is a contributing factor in the legitimization of surveillance. In this study, the phenomenon of surveillance in the swedish daily press is studied to analyze themes within the discourse as well as possible occurring legitimizing arguments. This is done through a critical discourse analysis. The analysis material consists of news articles from Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter published 2018. The result indicates that selected articles legitimize surveillance in Sweden. It appears that the news media contributes to constructing a perception of reality in which surveillance is legitimately presented, which may contribute to social acceptance of the phenomenon among individuals.
